The UPRM Geophysics Laboratory

The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) is the only institution in the island to offer professional-level training in applied geophysics. Research Activities within the Geophysics Laboratory (GpL) fall into the two broad areas: (a) active- and passive- source seismology, and (b) applied geophysics. The two broad areas of research represent a general working framework to encourage and promote multi-disciplinary reseach activities. Passive-source Seismology Studies, include: Regional Moment Tensor Solutions, Lithospheric Structure and Evolution Studies using Receiver Functions and Surface Waves, and Tomography. Students at the UPRM Geophysics Laboratory, conduct applied research in urban regions to solve Geologic, Engineering and Environmental problems. Geologic, Engineering and Environmental problems include, but are not limited to, studies related to earthquake and landslide hazards, voids-detection in karst terrains, groundwater exploration, and utility detection.

The UPRM Geophysics Laboratory (Room F-416, ext 3591) provides the physical venue of the geophysics program, supports undergraduate and graduate students, and houses dedicated geophysics-computing facilities. Some advanced level courses are taught at the laboratory.

Teaching and research programs are enhanced through constructive links with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network(PRSN).
